How to use the meta tag checker
What this checker reads
It parses the <title> tag, meta name="description", meta name="robots" (and the equivalent X-Robots-Tag intent, if you paste it as a comment), and the canonical link tag from pasted HTML, then flags length problems and anything missing.
Title and description length: guidelines, not hard limits
Google doesn't enforce a strict character cap — it truncates based on pixel width, which varies by character. As a practical guideline this checker flags titles outside roughly 50-60 characters and descriptions outside roughly 140-160 characters as worth a second look, not as a fail.
A missing or wrong canonical is a bigger risk than a slightly long title
A missing canonical lets Google pick one for you, which can select the wrong URL on a site with parameters, pagination, or duplicate content. A self-referencing canonical on every unique page is the safest default; check this before worrying about title length.
Meta Tag Checker FAQ
Is the meta tag checker free?
Yes. The meta tag checker is free to use on Seobase with no signup required for the on-page meta tag audit.
Can I use the meta tag checker for SEO content?
Yes. The tool is built for search-focused workflows and pairs best with human review before publishing.
What's the difference between this and the meta description generator?
The meta description generator writes new title and description tags from scratch. This checker audits tags that already exist on a page — paste your rendered HTML to see what's there today before deciding whether to rewrite it.
Does meta robots="noindex" mean the page is definitely out of Google's index?
It means Google is instructed not to index the page on its next crawl — it's a directive, not an instant removal. A page can still show in results for a short window after the tag is added, until Google recrawls it.
Should every page have a canonical tag?
Yes, even a self-referencing one on a page with no duplicates. It costs nothing and removes ambiguity if the URL ever gets query parameters, tracking tags, or a printer-friendly variant added later.

If you want to know how to add meta keywords in WordPress, the short answer is simple: do not add them for Google rankings. The meta keywords tag is an obsolete HTML element. Google officially stopped using it for web search rankings in September 2009 because site owners abused it with keyword stuffing.
Short answer: Technical SEO makes a page reachable, crawlable, and understandable to search engines. On-page SEO makes the page the best answer for a searcher. Fix technical blockers first, then improve the page’s intent match, structure, and evidence. Doing more of one cannot compensate for a failure in the other.
