What it reads, and what it cannot
It fetches the page's HTML and reads image references from img tags, responsive srcset candidates, source elements and the og:image meta tag, resolving relative paths against the page URL. It does NOT run JavaScript, so images a framework injects after load will not appear. That is a real limit worth knowing before you conclude a page has few images.
Why og:image matters more than it looks
The Open Graph image is the one every social platform and many AI answer surfaces show when your page is shared. It is also the one most often missing or stale, because nothing on the page itself displays it. Seeing it listed next to the visible images is usually how people notice it is wrong.
