How to use the canonical url checker
What a canonical URL does
A canonical link tells search engines which URL represents a page when several URLs expose substantially similar content. It is a hint, not a forceful redirect, so the canonical should be a real, indexable final URL that matches the page's intent.
What this checker catches
Paste the rendered HTML and the checker reports whether a canonical link is missing, duplicated, conflicting, relative, or not an absolute HTTP(S) URL. It does not fetch the page, follow redirects, or claim that Google selected the same canonical; confirm those separately in Search Console.
Canonical checks before publishing
Use one canonical element, point it at the preferred final URL, and keep internal links and the sitemap consistent with that choice. Check query parameters, trailing slashes, protocol, redirects, and language variants deliberately instead of normalizing them blindly.
Generate a canonical tag
If you already know the preferred absolute URL, enter it in the generator field to create a copy-ready link element. Generation does not prove that the URL returns 200 or that Google selected it; check the published page separately.
Canonical URL Checker FAQ
Is the canonical URL checker free?
Yes. The canonical URL checker is free to use on Seobase with no signup required for the on-page canonical check.
Can I use the canonical URL checker for SEO content?
Yes. The tool is built for search-focused workflows and pairs best with human review before publishing.
Does the checker crawl my URL?
No. It only reads the HTML you paste, so the source stays in your browser. Use URL Inspection or a crawler when you need to verify the fetched page and Google's selected canonical.
Should a canonical URL be absolute?
Yes. An absolute HTTPS URL makes the preferred URL unambiguous across environments and is easier to compare with redirects, internal links, and your sitemap.
Can a canonical tag fix duplicate content by itself?
It can consolidate signals, but it is only a hint. Keep one preferred URL, link consistently to it, and avoid publishing contradictory canonicals or redirect chains.
Can this tool generate a canonical tag?
Yes. Enter an absolute HTTP(S) URL and it returns a copy-ready canonical link element. It does not fetch the URL or verify Google's selected canonical.
