Headings become ATX (#) headings, links and images keep their targets, lists keep their nesting, code blocks stay fenced, and tables convert to GitHub-flavoured Markdown rather than being flattened into prose. Styling that has no Markdown equivalent — colours, fonts, inline CSS — is dropped, which is the point.
Why convert at all
